Following the Quicktime codec updates many of us have seen our ability to view the trailers at Apple Trailers diminished. Some of you have written expressing concern, while others have written with a fix or work-around. As always, thanks for your input.
This morning I installed Mplayer from the Sarge repository on my kid's machine. This worked fine. What I don't like about this setup is that the video is embedded in the page. I like the Totem/w32codecs setup that opens a totem window to view any audio/video. I like it because I can re-size the box and I think the embedded screens are too small. But that's just me. I don't use Firefox anymore but I did test the Mplayer option with it. Works fine. When I ran Windows I used Opera exclusively and now I'm back with it. For me it's the best browser going. For you - well, you may not agree - but I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the subject. Anyway, after installing Mplayer I opened Opera on my kid's machine and went into the program preferences. Get there by ALT + T, then r. In the preferences dialog box click the Advanced tab then choose downloads from the list on your left. You'll see a long list of file types that Opera wants you to associate with particular programs. Scroll down the list to video types with the QT/Mov extensions and choose to use the MozPlugger plugin for those types. Also, choose content from that same list on your left and click plugins. Check for new plugins. That's all that I did. Easy. Now my 4-year-old son can be sucked into the commercialism that is America. WOOHOO!!! You do already have those w32codecs installed, right. Listen, the multimedia tutorial on debiantutorials.org is specific to Totem. Should you decide to just go with Mplayer following a new Debian install, or whatever, than you don't have to modify the mozpluggerrc file at all. Just install it, your codecs, ffmpeg, mplayer, etc. and you'll be good to go. If you want to stay with the default Sarge desktop (Gnome and subsequently, Totem) install then Totem will not allow you to see the trailers on Apple's trailer page until the codecs are updated to account for Apple's Quicktime codec updates.
