What's Root?
Root is the super-ultra-mega. All system commands on a Linux box need to be done as root. This means installing software and changing files not in your /home directory, etc. In your terminal, if you're logged in already become root by typing su at your $ prompt, then the root password. Log in the system directly as root from a terminal, but not the graphical login. # shows root.

[EDIT: Debian GNU/Linux - Etch: w32codecs are no longer needed for mplayer and wmv9. Basically, if you are using gstreamer than you'll still want to install the codecs. October, 2006]

Hello --

You may have arrived at debiantutorials.org after searching for "w32codecs Debian" on Google. In order to assist you as conveniently as possible here's all you need to know, step by step:

  • open a terminal
  • become root (su)
  • # gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
  • add the marillat repos:
     #codecs
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ sarge main
#deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ etch main
#deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ sid main
  • save and close the file in Gedit
  • # apt-get update
  • # apt-get install w32codecs

You may want to add Marillat's key to your ring so apt-get stops showing you an error. In your terminal as root issue the following commands:

# gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 07DC563D1F41B907
# gpg --export | apt-key add -

Enjoy Debian and all that comes with it.

In 64 bit it's now 'aptitude install w64codecs' or 'apt-get' if you prefer
