What's Root?
Root is the super-ultra-mega. All system commands on a Linux box need to be done as root. This means installing software and changing files not in your /home directory, etc. In your terminal, if you're logged in already become root by typing su at your $ prompt, then the root password. Log in the system directly as root from a terminal, but not the graphical login. # shows root.

I have forgotten the necessity of this tutorial with Debian Sarge as I have been running Etch for some months. Out of site, out of mind. I seem to believe that on my hardware anyway that this config was unnecessary. Anyway, sometimes after installing your Debian Desktop you may have trouble burning CDs and DVDs with Nautilus's right-click menu item: Write to Disc.

You will know right away following your first attempt if you need to enable SUID for cdrecord. Or, if you even have it installed. Do this from the command line:

whereis cdrecord. If it shows you - you're in, if no, then install it:

# apt-get install cdrecord

If you had to install it then you'll be doing what this tutorial suggests to do anyway; you can stop reading now - enable SUID.

If you have cdrecord installed and your disc burn fails at time one try this and see if it doesn't help:

# dpkg-reconfigure cdrecord

You will see your terminal change into the following screen:

# dpkg-reconfigure cdrecord

It's up to you to accept the consequences of enabling SUID. Do a search web-wide to get some points-of-view on the matter. I enable it because I like to right-click on an .ISO occasionally. Sure, there are any number of ways to burn an .ISO to disc, at debiantutorials.org some are mentioned. Some people want this sort of functionality in Nautilus...hey, that's cool. Do what you like. You may have trouble burning a disc in any number of other programs as well. This is the first step to fixing that.
