What??? A Windows How - To?
Sure, how to get your Debian Linux onto a USB stick. Now you can run Linux on your PC, with absolutely no affect to your Windows desktop. And no need to carry a CD or DVD, this is as easy as 1 - 2 - 3! (NOTE - If your desktop is as old as mine, it is possible that your BIOS does not support a USB boot, not to worry, the Live CD will still work fine)!
FROM MS Windows:
1) Download the needed distribution iso (save it on your PC somewhere you can find it). We'll be open and easy here, any Linux Distibution that utilizes a Live CD. Just download it's iso file to your pc. Hint - debiantutorials.org has the iso files linked on our home page.
2) Download a copy of the HP utility SP27608.exe This will install a program to your PC to allow you to reformat the USB stick as bootable. This will cause a loss of all data on the USB/pen drive, so make sure you save everything you want.
3) Download and run unetbootin from sourceforge.net. I had a bit of a run around getting to the exact file for a Windows exe file download, but once done, it worked like a champ. Make sure you point the running program to the USB stick drive, and also, I selected the iso as the install source to ensure I got the Linux version USB stick I wanted, but that's it.
When you re-boot. you merely use the boot identifier (F12 key in most cases), use the arrow keys to select the USB drive, and boot from the USB right into your favorite distribution. Of course, once you test run it and enjoy the newest offering on your desktop, feel free to install!
