I was thinking the other day, and we don't position Linux like we should.

So the search engines can find it.

Like this:

Rock solid, stable Operating System.  Replace Windows and use linux.  You will be glad you did.  What you get for your efforts is a rock solid desktop, Nimble, and secure.

What you don't get is compatible to Windows programs.  What you do get is compatible to Windows program functionality.  Need a game for the children download it.  How about a home budget program.  Download it.  Need a office personal information manager. Down er it's already in there.

Ready to go, rock solid, easy to install, ready for prime time, and your cost, as Joe Average Consumer.  Nada.  zilch, Nothing.  It will cost you a CD to burn it to after you download the iso.  So, not really free, but free as in less than a buck, plus your internet costs for the download.

So, JUST DOwnload IT.

Aptitude it. Apt-get it, Synapticize it (all front-ends to dpkg, by the way). It's pretty rare that you'd
actually have to download software for your Debian GNU/Linux box. Games for kids, yeah - aptitude. Home
budget, again, aptitude. Fire-up Synaptic and search for these things using proper "keywords". These
packages (a few of each) are already in the repos.

Of course, You are right in that if you do need a thing
not part of Debian's better than 25 thousand piece collection, you could just download it. This puts a lot of
folks off, though, because these downloads are typically source packages that must be compiled. Which, is
dead simple, but you know how folks can be.

The trick with Synaptic is to search by more than one phrase.
For example I just installed Synaptic and searched "kids games". Slim pickings and different results
than "educational games" or "games for kids" Of course, there is a category devoted to games
that will yield far more results.

Same for "home budget" and "personal finance". Both
yielded results but they were different.

Always enjoy stopping in to read your stuff.

So the other day, while trying to convert another windoze person to the light, I recommend a search in
Synaptic for "music player or some such. She showed me a thing or two.

To find just what you want, in
Synaptic, it's often easiest to search for what you want the Windows equivalent of. For a great budget or
check book software, search for Quicken. You won't get it, but you will like what you find!
