spca5xx used to be the way to get your web cam rolling on Linux.  I guess it's no longer as gspca has supplanted it.  This is what I did yesterday to get my camera working:

Plugged in my camera, fired-up a terminal...

$ su
# aptitude update
# aptitude install module-assistant
# m-a prepare
# m-a a-i gspca
# modprobe gspca
# aptitude install camorama
# exit
$ camorama

Damn !! When did I get so fugly!?

gspca used to take care of my other camera but I've got a new laptop with a hp web cam built in.
